FAQ – Kimono & Yukata

What does "kimono" mean?
"Kimono" means "a thing to wear" in Japan and is used to describe full-length robes.

What is a Happi Coat?
A Happi Coat is a shorter version of the kimono. Standard-sized kimono and yukata are available in lengths from 54" to 64". A Happi Coat or short-length kimono will vary between 35" to 45" in length. These robes will hang longer on shorter people and shorter on taller people.

Where are your kimono and yukata robes made?
Our robes are made in Japan of 100% cotton and we also offer several styles in 100% silk. We have long-standing relationships with our manufacturers and only accept fine quality robes with attention to quality craftsmanship.

Do you sell Chinese Kimono? No, we only offer quality Kimono from Japan which we know are produced slave-free. It has long been reported that China participates in slave labor to keep costs low. Whether from harvesting cotton in the fields to making clothing in factories, there are reports from reputable watchdog groups that say even children are sometimes involved. For this reason, we do not offer any Kimono made in China. You can find those on Amazon, Etsy, and other similar websites, but not here.

I am unsure about SIZING, can you help?
For sizing reference, circumference is the entire width of the fabric, from end to end, as if the robe was fully opened and laid flat on a table. The robe is designed to wrap around you and fasten with the belt. This allows the robe to drape and contour around your body and easily adjust to many waists and hip sizes. To measure your waist, measure the circumference around your waist just above your belly button. Stand in a relaxed posture and breathe out. To measure your hips, measure the circumference around your hips at the widest part.

For length, measure yourself with a tape measure from the top of your shoulder and down your side to determine where the length would fall on you.

Do you offer free shipping?
Yes, we offer Free Shipping on kimono, Yukata, Happi Coats, and apparel anywhere in the USA on orders of $75.00 or more.

When do you ship my order?
We ship as quickly as possible. Most orders ship within one business day of order receipt and many ships the same day. We are a full-time professional business and ship 6 days per week, including Saturdays. Our warehouse is staffed daily at varying times depending on carrier pick-ups, volumes, holiday surges, and customer demand.

Are kimono and yukata robes only for special occasions?
No. These Japanese-style robes are popular for a variety of reasons. Many of our customers purchase them as housecoats or robes, as loungewear, or the shorter "Happi Coats" as swimsuit cover-ups. These robes make unique Mother's Day and Father's Day gifts, bridesmaid gifts, groomsmen gifts, nursing robes, or hospital robes. They are commonly worn at weddings too. Others have purchased them to wear for special events, promotional ideas, and even as costumes in theater and film.

What are the benefits of buying a kimono or yukata from Kimono Shop?
Kimono Shop has been an online retailer since 1994. We are a well-established, USA-based, and operated business. We provide fast shipping, and easy returns and offer one of the largest selections of authentic Japanese kimono and yukata in the USA. We carry many styles and sizes and our offerings change frequently. We are a direct importer and pride ourselves on offering quality robes at reasonable prices. As we like to say, "Shop with confidence". We have a large number of repeat customers and that speaks for itself. We are grateful to our customers for 28 years in business and counting.

Is there an advantage to buying a kimono from Kimono Shop instead of a dealer in Japan?
Buying from Kimono Shop means you are buying from a reputable US-based dealer with a 28-year track record of selling robes online. Shipping is quick and most orders ship within one business day of order receipt. Delivery times average 2-3 business days. Buying from Kimono Shop means you won't pay any customs, import fees, or duties that are often assessed on shipments from Japan. Returns are simple and hassle-free. Customers who try overseas dealers regularly share negative stories with us. The expensive International shipping costs or experiencing refusal of returns are common complaints we hear about. Customers are often shocked to learn that returning a 1 lb. package to Japan costs between $30.00 and $60.00 using USPS with insurance and tracking. Kimono Shop takes the guesswork out of your shopping experience.

Do you buy used kimono?
No, Kimono Shop does not purchase used or what some dealers call "vintage" kimono. We discovered many years ago that the used kimono market is very difficult to navigate. It is one thing if you shop at a used clothing store and can see the actual garment, but buying online is hit or miss. The way dealers judge or grade the kimono is merely one person's opinion. If you had five people judge the condition of a used robe, you would most likely get five different answers. Read our blog about this subject. We are not disparaging the used kimono market, but it just isn't for us. We prefer to deal only in clean, high-quality, new, and ready-to-wear clothing.

How do you tie or keep a kimono closed?
All of our Yukata, kimono, and Happi Coats include a matching belt or sash. If you wish for something more formal, and distinctive, or to provide contrast, we offer Obi in several colors that are sold separately.

How do I care for my kimono or yukata?
We recommend washing cotton robes in cold water and hanging dry or tumble dry on low heat for best results. Many customers prefer drip-drying on a kimono hanger. For silk robes, dry cleaning is recommended, although gentle hand washing with a mild detergent like Woolite has been safe and effective.

What is the difference between a kimono and a yukata?
Traditionally a Yukata was often worn in the summer months with its lighter-weight fabric. Today, it is a matter of personal preference depending on your lifestyle and the climate you live in. Many of our robes feature similar fabric weights except for our Premium Line which uses a heavier material and features a higher-end weave. Some designs are more intricate and require premium fabrics to bring the details to life.

Do you have a unisex kimono yukata, or robes that can be worn by both men and women? Yes. Depending on your style preference, many patterns can be worn by either sex. Some examples from the "men's section" that are popular with women are Dragon & Bamboo, Four Seasons, Dragon, The Seasons, Blue Koi, Dancing Characters, White Moji, and Navy Longevity. Note: if you are a woman choosing a kimono or yukata from the men's section, please be aware the sizing is scaled for a man, and order a smaller size.

If I receive my kimono and it is longer than I want, is it okay to hem it?
Yes, our robes are finished with a straight seam, and shortening one at a local tailor or alteration store is relatively low cost. Of course, if you are handy with the sewing machine, you can do it yourself. We also accept returns and exchanges if a robe doesn't fit the way you like. Simply contact us within 10 days of order receipt to request a Return Authorization.

FAQ – Mala Beads and Meaningful Jewelry

What Are Mala Beads ?

A mala is a string of beads that are used in meditation to help keep track of the number of times you've recited, chanted or said a mantra or prayer. Mala beads are made from a variety or materials including wood, stone, minerals, gemstones, bone and seeds. An individual chooses one based on their own personal needs and preferences. Beads come in many different colors representing specific beliefs and energies. For example: red represents passion or energy; white represents purity; black symbolizes power and strength; green stands for health and healing while blue signifies calmness and peace. Malas are available in necklaces and wrist bracelets and are worn as jewelry by both men and women. They make a great accessory or fashion statement for any outfit.

Why Use Mala Beads ?

Mala beads are used for meditation and prayer. It's a Buddhist tradition that has been around for thousands of years. Mala are also worn as jewelry, as a reminder of who we are and what we have to be grateful for. The prayer beads originated in Tibet and were originally made from stones or wood that had been worn smooth by water. Today, they are made from many different materials such as glass, jade, turquoise, crystal and more. A mala necklace is usually arranged on a string of 108 beads with a guru bead. The word "Mala" means garland of flowers in the Sanskrit language. It is considered to be symbolic of spiritual practice because it's said, that when we wear our mala beads, we carry them around our neck like a garland, representing both protection and beauty. Using mala beads during meditation allows one to focus on the mantra and its meaning rather than counting the number of repetitions. This helps to stay focused and keeps the mind clear from distractions. Each bead represents one recitation of the mantra or prayer.

How do I use Mala beads ?

A mala is a Buddhist tool used for meditation to count prayers. It can be worn around the neck or carried in your pocket to remind you that you have something to pray for or meditate. The beads are strung together on a strand or cord. Each bead represents an aspect to focus on when meditating, making it easier to concentrate while repeating mantras (Buddhist prayers).

Starting with the bead next to the guru bead, hold the mala in your right hand with the middle finger and thumb. Recite a mantra or prayer, then pass one additional bead through the finger and thumb and continue around the entire length of the necklace or bracelet. By using this method, you avoid counting the beads which causes a loss of focus and clarity of the mind and mantra. Let the beads count for you, don't count the beads.

What is Meaningful Jewelry ?

Meaningful jewelry has multiple definitions. A necklace may be meaningful because of the person who gave it to you. Earrings might be special because of where you were when you bought it.
